Mr. Lachhman Singh Sandhu

Born on July 6, 1941 in Rasulpur, India. He was raised in Manuke, a village on Guru Gobind Singh Marg
in district Ludhiana, state of Punjab. The village is populated mostly by Sandhu families.
Son of Late Mr. Pritam Singh and Bachan Kaur Sandhu, eldest of 9 children. He always shared his
passion for education with particular interest in Science. He attended the Government School of
Manuke and joined the Indian Army at age 18. He developed his technical skills and training in the
Electrical Mechanical Engineering division of the Army and served for 12 years.

He married Mohinder Kaur Grewal in 1962. They had a solid, happy marriage and partnership of 59
years. He was romantic and was not afraid to show his love and affection to his wife. They stood
shoulder to shoulder in every aspect of life.

Being the eldest son, he took on the responsibility of his entire family and migrated to Canada in 1972.
He worked extremely hard to successfully improve quality of life and provide progressive opportunities;
not just for his family but also for his siblings, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.

His Army experience enabled him to secure employment with the Canadian National Railway, a world-
class transportation leader and the only transcontinental railway in North America. He built great
relationships with management and formed strong friendships with co-workers and kept in touch to
present date. He took early retirement after 28 years of service in 2002 and retired with the title of
“Mr. Overtime”.

He was truly selfless in nature, full of life, joy, love, gratitude and cherished every moment, every
relationship. His entire life was dedicated to helping others, being involved in community work and
political affairs. He simply believed in SEVA and would dedicate his time to the Gurudwara where he
would spend countless hours washing dishes, helping with langar or wherever he was needed. He also
served as a member of the Glidden Gurdwara Committee, volunteered at places like the Canadian
Citizenship Office. His interest in politics steered him to become actively involved in local campaigns
resulting to invitations to the Mayor of Brampton home parties and provincial/federal political
functions.

While he worked hard he also lived life to the fullest. Being an army man, he was disciplined with his
health, fitness and diet regimes. At the age of 80, he exercised 2 hours a day and would ride his bike in
the summers. His principals were to live with honesty, integrity, love and respect. He believed wealth
was not measured by the amount of money in one’s account, but rather good character, good health
and family made you the wealthiest person in the world.

He was a self made man, a beautiful soul and a wise man. He had endless love, hugs and smiles,
unmatched by any. His family and circle of friends was his world. He had a special ability to connect
with any and every generation. He was the greatest friend to his wife, children and grandkids. He was a
die-hard Maple Leaf fan and enjoyed hockey talk with his grandkids! Never missed a game, he was our
very own hockey dad!

He was completely fulfilled, grateful and content with his life’s journey. He passed away on April 13 th at
2:05 AM and Merged with the Divine Light: “Jot Milee Sang Jot” - This composition by Guru Arjan Dev,
light of the soul merging with the light of infinite divine offering consolation to the bereaved upon a
loved one’s departure from the earthly realm.

I’m Free
Don’t’ grieve for me, for now I’m free.
I’m following the path God laid for me.
I took his hand when I heard him call;
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way;
I found that place at the close of day.
If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss;
Ah yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life’s been full, I savoured much;
Good friends, good time, a loved one’s touch.
Perhaps my time seems all too brief;
Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me,
God wanted me now,
He set me free.
